VirtualBox version 6.0 or later is required to install and launch vESR.
1) Launch VirtualBox. To create virtual machine, click the 'New' button in main menu.

2) Specify name of the virtual machine in the 'Name' field. In the following example, vESR will be installed, so put 'vESR' in the 'Name' field.
It is recommended to give the virtual machine a simple and descriptive name. |
3) Before selecting a disk, make sure that the user has rights to work with this disk and that the technical condition of the disk allows it to be used as a system disk for a virtual machine.
In the 'Machine Folder' field, specify the path where the virtual machine will be stored.
4) In the 'Type' field, select the 'Linux' operational system.
5) In the 'Version' field, select any 64 bit version. In the given example 'Other Linux (64-bit)' is selected.
6) Click 'Next' to go to the next step.

7) Select the amount of RAM to allocate to the virtual machine. For correct operation, it is recommended to maintain a balance between the amount of RAM of the virtual and host systems.
The minimum amount of RAM must be at least 3GB. |
8) Click 'Next' to go to the next step.

9) Select the 'Create a virtual hard disk now' option.
10) Click 'Create' to go to the next step.

11) You can select any disk type. In the given example 'VDI (VirtualBox Disk Image)' is selected.
12) Click 'Next' to go to the next step.

13) You can select any disk storage format. In the given example 'Dynamically allocated' is selected.
14) Click 'Next' to go to the next step.

15) Set the name of the new virtual disk.
16) Set disk size.
Minimum disk size is 500 MB. |
17) Click 'Create' to create the virtual machine.

Virtual machine has been successfully created.
Among the files supplied with vESR, there is a file with the .vdi or .vdmk (for VMware Workstation) extension, which is a pre-configured virtual hard disk containing the vESR image vESR. VirtualBox allows importing both disk formats. In this example, the .vdi format is used.
To launch the virtual disk, complete steps 1–8 of the previous chapter, "Creating virtual machine".
9) Select "Use an Existing Virtual Hard Disk File".
10) Select a file from your device.
11) Click 'Next' to go to the next step.

12) Click "Finish".

A virtual machine has been successfully created with an imported hard disk containing pre-installed vESR.
1) Go to the created virtual machine.

2) Click "Start".

3) In the opened menu, go to the optical disk image selection section.

4) Click "Add".

5) Go to the directory containing the pre-downloaded ISO image.
6) Choose an ISO image with vESR and click "Open".

7) Click "Choose".

8) Click "Start".

9) The next installation steps are detailed in the "vESR installation process" section.
10) Close the window.
11) Power off the virtual machine.

12) Open the "Settings" menu.

13) Open the"Storage" menu.
14) Select "vesr.iso".
15) Delete the selected drive.
16) Confirm the deletion.
17) Click 'OK' to complete configuration.

vESR is installed and ready for operation.
1) Go to the settings of the virtual machine on which vESR is installed.

2) Open the 'Network' menu.
3) Enable network adapter.
4) Select connection type.
5) Select which interface on the host system will be used for connection.
6) To configure additional parameters, click 'Advanced'.
7) Select adapter type. In the example, the settings are made by VirtualBox by default.
8) Proceed to second interface configuration.

9) Enable network adapter.
10) Select connection type.
11) Select which interface on the host system will be used for connection.
12) To configure additional parameters, click 'Advanced'.
13) Select adapter type. In the example, paravirtualized type is selected.
14) Click 'OK' to complete interface configuration.

The settings in this section are optional and do not affect system operation. |
1) Go to the settings of the virtual machine on which vESR is installed.

2) Open 'Serial Ports' menu.
3) Enable Serial port.
4) Select COM Port.
5) Select the port type. In this example, Host Pipe is used as the port type.
6) Disable the option 'Connect to existing pipe/socket'.
7) Specify the connection address: the name of the file used for data transfer.
8) Click 'OK' to complete configuration.

Now you can connect to vESR via the serial port.
