Assigning virtual machine interfaces to vESR interfaces

By default, paravirtualized interfaces are assigned to the Gigabit Ethernet interfaces.

Attention

When the device is rebooted, the interfaces are sorted in ascending order by MAC address. When a new interface is added, it may be sorted into the middle of the list.

Example:

vesr# debug
vesr(debug)# show nic

Add an interface in the hypervisor and restart vESR.

vesr# debug
vesr(debug)# show nic

As can be seen, the interface was added and took a place in the middle of the list.

For correct operation, all settings applied to gi1/0/2 must be transferred to gi1/0/3.

If necessary, the position of the interfaces in vESR can be changed. To do this:

1) Go to the debug menu.

vesr# debug

2) Run the the show nic command to show the interfaces available:

vesr(debug)# show nic

3) Next, the MAC address of the required interface must be bound to the vESR interface. In the example, the MAC address 08:00:27:d4:21:a5 is assigned to fortygigabitethernet 1/0/1:

vesr(debug)# nic bind mac 08:00:27:d4:21:a5 fortygigabitethernet 1/0/1

4) To apply the settings, reboot the device:

vesr# reload system 

5) After the reboot, use the show interfaces status command to check that the interface has been redefined:

vesr# show interfaces status

Changing the system MAC address

By default, vESR has the system MAC address A2:00:00:00:00:00 and the serial number VESR0000000. For correct operation of the L2 protocols, it is recommended to change it.

The device MAC address is generated based on the serial number.

To change the MAC address:

1) Set the serial number:

vesr# set serial-number VESR0000001
WARNING!!! Changes of serial number will be applied after system reboot

2) Reboot the device.

virtual-serial command for outputting logs to the serial console

By default, vESR logs are output to the VGA console.

The virtual-serial command enables output of system logs to the virtual serial console.

Using the command in the configuration:

vesr# configure
vesr(config)# syslog console
vesr(config-syslog-console)# virtual-serial
2025-08-15T09:57:16+00:00 %SYS-W-EVENT: WARNING!!! Changes of virtual-serial will be applying after reboot
vesr(config-syslog-console)# end

To apply the settings, the device must be rebooted.
